December 30, 2016 surfing podcast. Rules. There are attempts. We’ve all seen the carved wooden signs telling us how, when and where to surf with “etiquette.” Etiquette is fucking golf term. Surfing has no etiquette. Closest to the peak or surfer who’s been waiting? No one really knows. Regardless, rules, norms, ideals – they sound good on wood, but not in the water. Isn’t that part of surfing’s allure? The Wild West. No rules – just paid parking and Strabucks. Our culture holds onto this 1950’s era beatnik-motorcycle-outlaw-fringes-of-society image, but expects everyone to know and follow rules that are carved into a wooden sign. I prefer chaos. I’d be okay with rules if we all followed them. Our problem is that every surfer has his/her own set of individualistic set of rules. ‘Merica. Individualism. Plus we talk about Highlights of 2016 and upcoming WSL WCT Surfers. The best to NOT be World Champion. Jordy. Kolohe. Julian. Who of these three.

In this pod we talk about upgrading the Pipeline Masters and Via the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing. Have the bottom 10 surfers of the WCT relinquish their spots in the PipeMasters so that potential Vans Triple Crown winners and past Pipe Champion can compete; think JOB, Rob Machado, Bruce Irons, Derek Ho, Tom Carroll. Plus must have items for a Mentawai trip. We also talk about Dane Reynolds getting dissed by The Inertia and Dane's rebuttal. We also talk about the WeedMaps House on the North Shore.

Dane is saying,"I am not a competitive surfer; I’m a surfer."

Interestingly when I think of Dane Reynolds’ I often, not always, but often, I think of the Club Sandwich turn he threw down at Haleiwa a few years ago during the REEF Hawaiian Pro competition.

In Chapter 11 and other video clips Dane Reynolds has undoubtedly surfed freer, expressed himself more deeply, and more sincerely. But will history look back on Dane’s legacy and point to the Club Sandwich at Haleiwa as his Sistine Chapel? Or, more likely, and like Michelangelo, will Dane’s legacy include many works of art with the Club Sandwich at Haleiwa being one of the highlights in a fine list of waves surfed

Gives you a good dose of stoke and some insight into where Dane Reynolds mind is at right now.

Down The Line Vault: Way back in 2008 Fernando Aguerre was talking Olympics with us. I asked him point blank if surfing in the Olympics was a reality. he said Surfing in the Olympics in 2020. He predicated it! ISA President Fernando Aguerre plus some other good stuff from Marty Thomas and Scott Bass.
